Projekt722

722 Metropolitan Ave, Fl 2Brooklyn, NY 11211

Artists: Elizabeth Boyle, Kati Gegenheimer, Audrey Hope, Kyoung eun Kang, Karen Ostrom, Brigitta Varadi.

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 13, 6pm–9pm

Embarking on a quest to rediscover wonder usually ends in cavernous spaces still echoing whispers from pioneers long gone. This group exhibition tenderly confronts transformation and withstands the lure of predisposed role play. Each participating artist embraces intimacy while unapologetically evoking viewers into having an exchange with their concealed selves. Works include seductive ink blots, mermaid encounters, and operatic arias drifting between lighthouses.

BRIC Contemporary Artists Working in Textiles

Short list curator: Jordana Munk Martin writes about BRIC Contemporary Artists Working in Textiles.

''In my approach to highlighting artists from the BRIC Artist Registry, I sought to feature those who are directly employing either the medium or the processes of textiles to amplify their concepts. I found an inspiring grouping of artists, each exploring a unique aspect of textiles to identify something about our environment, our psyches, or our relationships.''

''The works of artist Brigitta Varadi are composed of textile processes such as dyeing and felting, and are often community-based, meaning the artist at times engages with the community to facilitate the making of a piece. This tactic serves as a nod to the rich social component and collaborative element in the history of textile-making. We are thrilled at Textile Arts Center to welcome Brigitta as our 2014 Sewing Seeds Artist in Residence, wherein the artist will incorporate similar themes in her proposed project.''

Brigitta Varadi, a Hungarian-born, Brooklyn-based artist incorporates textile processes such as dyeing, felting, and sculptural manipulation into her practice. We are very excited to have her with us and hope that you are there to join us with the completion of her project at the end of the summer.

LOCIS 2014 Art Residency

LOCIS: a two-year program of artistic residencies and cultural exchanges between Poland, Ireland and Sweden. The programme is funded under the EU Culture Programme and managed by the three project partners,Leitrim County Council Arts Office, the Centre of Contemporary Art in Toruń, and Residence Botkyrka.

LOCIS is designed as a knowledge-sharing project which seeks to create opportunities for artists to work together, regardless of their place of residence, and to enable them to establish collaborative relations and dialogue with internationally renowned artists who will also be involved in the project. Each residency program will engage artists from Poland, Sweden and Ireland.

LOCIS in 2014 will be thematically oriented towards exploration of our physical, social and political environment and alternative or self organized forms of artistic and social interaction.

Being located in places where artistic communities share the need for having a high degree of cultural activity and exchange, this collaborative project offers an opportunity to contemplate how artists help us consider new possibilities for social organization, our understanding of place, and ways to transcend physical, cultural and political boundaries.

The three artists/curators who will be leading residencies in 2014 are:

Ola Wasilkowska (Poland) who will lead a residency with Botkyrka Konsthall, Stockholm in Sweden.
Seamus Nolan (Ireland) who will lead a residency with the Centre of Contemporary Art in Torun, Poland
Johan Thurfjell (Sweden) who will lead a residency at The Dock in Carrick on Shannon, with Leitrim County Council Arts Office in Ireland.
