Contemplating OTHER: I know you are, You know I am

Gallery Route One

Invited Artists: Alice Escott, Linda Guenste, Brigitta Varadi,
Curated by Patricia Watts
Thursday, December 21 through Sunday, January 28
Opening Reception: Thursday, December 21, 3 - 5 PM, Artists' Talk, 2:30 - 3 PM
Salon: Sunday, January 28 4 to 5 PM

In Contemplating OTHER, three artists reflect on human-animal relationships. Selected by Curator
Patricia Watts, artists Alicia Escott, Linda Guneste, and Brigitta Varadi examine how our human
relationship with animals has dramatically altered over time. As world populations continue to rise
and as wild spaces are reduced due to human encroachments, our heightened interactions with
animals expand our awareness of both ourselves and other. As individuals, our consciousness of the
boundaries between humans and animals ultimately determines our own fate as a species. Having
become dependent on animals for psychological and nutritional needs, human beings don't often
know where the self ends and the other begins.

LOCIS Book Launch

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO THE LAUNCH OF A PUBLICATION ARISING FROM THE LOCIS PROGRAMME BY ORLAITH MCBRIDE, DIRECTOR OF THE ARTS COUNCIL.

THURSDAY MARCH 26TH, 2015, 6PM.

EUROPEAN UNION HOUSE, 18 DAWSON STREET, DUBLIN 2.

Locis is a collaborative programme, co-funded by the Culture Programme of the European Union, between Leitrim County Council Arts Office, Ireland; the Centre of Contemporary Art Znaki Czasu in Toruń, Poland; and Botkyrka Konsthall/Residence Botkyrka, Sweden. Locis was designed to provide knowledge, resources and opportunities for artists to engage internationally and to reinforce the principle that a vibrant arts practice should, and can, be maintained from anywhere and that networking across borders can occur from anywhere and with anyone.

As well as documenting the six residencies which made up the programme, the publication also contains essays by three writers who were asked to reflect on the programme in their country and to consider how residencies relate to their contexts and/or provide developmental opportunities for artists in a particular location. In addition, three other writers – Doreen Massey, Anik See and Saša Nabergoj were invited by the three curators to write essays on broader topics of specific interest to the three partners.

Leitrim Sculpture Centre Art Residency Award & Fellowship

Residency takes place between 23. February - 10 April 2015 at the Leitrim Sculpture Centre, Manorhamilton, Ireland.

Situated in the North West of Ireland within a rich and diverse rural landscape the Leitrim Sculpture Centre (LSC) provides one of the most comprehensive visual arts resources in Ireland.

Space and technology can be flexibly resourced at affordable rates for artists, local communities and international practitioners. We support research and experimentation in both the production and display of compelling and challenging new work and in the acquisition of traditional and contemporary skills and knowledge.

Our programme includes exhibitions, artists residencies, workshops, training, research, masterclasses, talks, symposia and additional projects that explore the local landscape and alternative and sustainable models of arts practice through trans-local networking and collaboration. LSC works with the wider community and values and supports innovation and increased training opportunities in art, design and communication for all.

BRIC Contemporary Artists Working in Textiles

Short list curator: Jordana Munk Martin writes about BRIC Contemporary Artists Working in Textiles.

''In my approach to highlighting artists from the BRIC Artist Registry, I sought to feature those who are directly employing either the medium or the processes of textiles to amplify their concepts. I found an inspiring grouping of artists, each exploring a unique aspect of textiles to identify something about our environment, our psyches, or our relationships.''

''The works of artist Brigitta Varadi are composed of textile processes such as dyeing and felting, and are often community-based, meaning the artist at times engages with the community to facilitate the making of a piece. This tactic serves as a nod to the rich social component and collaborative element in the history of textile-making. We are thrilled at Textile Arts Center to welcome Brigitta as our 2014 Sewing Seeds Artist in Residence, wherein the artist will incorporate similar themes in her proposed project.''
