LOCIS Book Launch

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO THE LAUNCH OF A PUBLICATION ARISING FROM THE LOCIS PROGRAMME BY ORLAITH MCBRIDE, DIRECTOR OF THE ARTS COUNCIL.

THURSDAY MARCH 26TH, 2015, 6PM.

EUROPEAN UNION HOUSE, 18 DAWSON STREET, DUBLIN 2.

Locis is a collaborative programme, co-funded by the Culture Programme of the European Union, between Leitrim County Council Arts Office, Ireland; the Centre of Contemporary Art Znaki Czasu in Toruń, Poland; and Botkyrka Konsthall/Residence Botkyrka, Sweden. Locis was designed to provide knowledge, resources and opportunities for artists to engage internationally and to reinforce the principle that a vibrant arts practice should, and can, be maintained from anywhere and that networking across borders can occur from anywhere and with anyone.

As well as documenting the six residencies which made up the programme, the publication also contains essays by three writers who were asked to reflect on the programme in their country and to consider how residencies relate to their contexts and/or provide developmental opportunities for artists in a particular location. In addition, three other writers – Doreen Massey, Anik See and Saša Nabergoj were invited by the three curators to write essays on broader topics of specific interest to the three partners.

LOCIS 2014 Art Residency

LOCIS: a two-year program of artistic residencies and cultural exchanges between Poland, Ireland and Sweden. The programme is funded under the EU Culture Programme and managed by the three project partners,Leitrim County Council Arts Office, the Centre of Contemporary Art in Toruń, and Residence Botkyrka.

LOCIS is designed as a knowledge-sharing project which seeks to create opportunities for artists to work together, regardless of their place of residence, and to enable them to establish collaborative relations and dialogue with internationally renowned artists who will also be involved in the project. Each residency program will engage artists from Poland, Sweden and Ireland.

LOCIS in 2014 will be thematically oriented towards exploration of our physical, social and political environment and alternative or self organized forms of artistic and social interaction.

Being located in places where artistic communities share the need for having a high degree of cultural activity and exchange, this collaborative project offers an opportunity to contemplate how artists help us consider new possibilities for social organization, our understanding of place, and ways to transcend physical, cultural and political boundaries.

The three artists/curators who will be leading residencies in 2014 are:

Ola Wasilkowska (Poland) who will lead a residency with Botkyrka Konsthall, Stockholm in Sweden.
Seamus Nolan (Ireland) who will lead a residency with the Centre of Contemporary Art in Torun, Poland
Johan Thurfjell (Sweden) who will lead a residency at The Dock in Carrick on Shannon, with Leitrim County Council Arts Office in Ireland.
